Yes, Keri, I have done the same. I was too young to remember it, though. I was diagnosed with cancer when I was four months old, went through intensive chemo and radiation. Kind of crazy, cuz my hair came in really dark brown when I was born, fell out, came back in blond, and over the years has switched back to dark brown. Weird.

Yeah, my mom battled cancer too and surived. How was your experience in terms of chemo and the whole medical process?

Post 5 by CrystalSapphire (Uzuri uongo ndani) on Saturday, 07-Mar-2009 7:27:50

well.. at some point i'll type my long story on here, but not now. alicia, chemo was hard on me but not as hard is it could have been. my hair was a dark red, then after chemo it came back a lighter shade of red very strange indeed. i also had a lot of food taste changes, and most of them still apply. well not most but it seems that way lol.

I've also had cancer and gone through chemo therapy. I don't remember much about it because I was about two or three. I also got the radiation treatment.
I was scared and angry throughout the entire process. Now, I don't really like hospitals. I hate the smell, the atmosphere, and the sound of IV's. Little things like that make me remember the down parts of being in the hospital when I was so young.

I had everything at 7 and 8 but like i said some time I'll tell the story here

If you aren't going to tell the story, why post a board about it?
I'm not sure what you're aim was when you started this, and all you wrote was, "I battled cancer and went through chemo."
That isn't really a topic, that's a statement of fact.

When I was 6 years in 1999 I started to have severe mygraine headaches, and i couldn't hold anything down. Not even meds. I started 1st grade in August. I had sight but had to where glasses. In october I went to see my eye doctor, and everything was usual. Then, I started to run in to stuff, and three days later I couldn't see anything at all.
My doctor lives like five hours away, so she order me a MRI for the hospital down here. So on November 11th 1999 12 days after I turned seven I went for a MRI. I had it, and they told me I was fine to go home. My eye doctor got a copy of the results though. My mom was going to school, so she went back, and my grandmaw took me home. I walked through the door and the phone rang. It was my family doctor who wanted to talk to my mom, so i took the phone to my grandmaw who told them where she was going to school.
That evening my mom came home bawing and informed us I had to be in morgantown that night or the next morning. That night we rushed to Morgantown as fast as I could.
When I got there they prepped me for surgery. They drain 100 and some C Cs of fluid from my brain, and removed as much of the cancer as they could. They diagnosed me with juvenile Polysystic Astrosytoma (JPA) which is a canceress brain tumor that is rare but can be deadly tumor on the optic nerve, and brain stem.

I started to take chemo in January of 2000. To sum this part up it caused me to loose my hair, and it came back a lighter shade then before. I couldn't eat certain foods, and still can't because of it. I've been off the chemo treatments since Febuary 20 of 2001 which I'm thankful I'll tell more about chemo later. If you have any questions just ask.

I am not a cancer survivor, but I just want to say that I am proud of you all for making it through and for the courage you've shown.

As am I, especially at such a young age when cancer shouldn't even have to be part of your vocabulary.

Post 17 by CrystalSapphire (Uzuri uongo ndani) on Thursday, 04-Mar-2010 13:53:54

thank you both, it is a hard ordeal, but i came out a stronger and better person. As several of us surviviors say it is a blessing, but yet a curse.

I can imagine it must be. Do you have any advoce for people who are currently going through it, or may in the future?
